zzgl. 5,90 € Versand

Symmetries and Singularity Structures

Symmetries and singularity structures play important roles in the study of nonlinear dynamical systems. It was Sophus Lie who originally stressed the importance of symmetries and invariance in the study of nonlinear differential equations. How ever, the full potentialities of symmetries had been realized only after the advent of solitons in 1965. It is now a well-accepted fact that associated with the infinite number of integrals of motion of a given soliton system, an infinite number of gep. eralized Lie BAcklund symmetries exist. The associated bi-Hamiltonian struc ture, Kac-Moody, Vrrasoro algebras, and so on, have been increasingly attracting the attention of scientists working in this area. Similarly, in recent times the role of symmetries in analyzing both the classical and quantum integrable and nonintegrable finite dimensional systems has been remarkable. On the other hand, the works of Fuchs, Kovalevskaya, Painleve and coworkers on the singularity structures associated with the solutions of nonlinear differen tial equations have helped to classify first and second order nonlinear ordinary differential equations. The recent work of Ablowitz, Ramani and Segur, con jecturing a connection between soliton systems and Painleve equations that are free from movable critical points, has motivated considerably the search for the connection between integrable dynamical systems with finite degrees of freedom and the Painleve property. Weiss, Tabor and Carnevale have extended these ideas to partial differential equations.

Under the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD), international efforts have been making to achieve by 2010 a significant reduction in the current rate of biodiversity loss. We are now standing at the threshold of the 10th Conference of Parties (COP10) of the CBD, which will be held in October of 2010 in Nagoya, Japan. It is essential that science is expected to play a leading role in the area of biodiversity, including characterizing biodiversity of various areas, clarifying ecosystem services supplied to society, quantifying how rapidly biodiversity is being lost, and justifying needs and identifying possibilities for conservation and sustainable use of biodiversity. To collect and analyze data on the status and trends of the world s biodiversity, the Group of Earth Biodiversity Observation Network (GEO-BON) was launched in 2008. However, the methodology to quantify biodiversity loss at the global, regional and national scale remains underdeveloped and integrative and predictive science for global biodiversity change must be urgently developed. DEVERSITAS, an international Programme of biodiversity science, is leading tasks of developing networks of integrative and predictive biodiversity science including GEO BON.In May 2009, Japanese scientists have successfully organized J-BON, Japanese Biodiversity Observation Network. The aim of the J-BON was to have the network of research and/or monitoring of ecosystem and/or biodiversity in Japan and to establish a cooperative framework for building a robust research network. In addition, the Asia-Pacific BON has successfully launched in July 2009, and its second meeting was held in December 2009 in Tokyo. Having crossed into the Asian Millennium , many Asian countries are now rapidly growing their economies and social infrastructures. This, on the other hand, is causing a rapid loss of Asian biodiversity, giving us an urgent mandate to work toward achieving a harmonious balance between development and conservation in the region. To provide a quantum step forward in advancing science that optimizes the synergy between development and biodiversity conservation in Asia, we would like to publish the book entitled as Biodiversity observation network in the Asia-Pacific Region .

Magnetic Interactions in Molecules and Solids

This textbook is the second volume in the Theoretical Chemistry and Computational Modeling series and aims to explain the theoretical basis of magnetic interactions at a level that will be useful for master students in physical, inorganic and organic chemistry. The book gives a treatment of magnetic interactions in terms of the phenomenological spin Hamiltonians that have been such powerful tools for chemistry and physics in the past half century, starting from the simple Heisenberg and Ising Hamiltonians and ending with Hamiltonians that include biquadratic, cyclic or anisotropic exchange. On the other hand, it also explains how quantum chemical methods, reaching from simple mean field methods to accurate models that include the effects of electron correlation and spin-orbit coupling, can help to understand the magnetic properties. Connecting the two perspectives is an essential aspect of the book, since it leads to a deeper understanding of the relation between physical phenomena and basic properties. It also makes clear that in many cases one can derive magnetic coupling parameters not only from experiment, but also from accurate ab initio calculations. The book starts with introducing a selection of basic concepts and tools. Throughout the book the text is interlarded with exercises, stimulating the students to not only read but also verify the assertions and perform (parts of) the derivations by themselves. In addition, each chapter ends with a number of problems that can be used to check whether the material has been understood.

Invitation to Quantum Informatics

The present text covers the connections between information and its processing on the one hand, and physics on the other. In the spirit of Rolf Landauer's slogan "Information is physical," consequences of physical laws for communication and computation are discussed, e.g. the second law of thermodynamics. In the second part, the pessimism of the first part is overcome and new possibilities offered by the laws of quantum physics for information processing are discussed: cryptography, teleportation, dense coding, and algorithms such as Grover's. The culmination point is Shor's miraculous method for efficiently factoring integers. The epilogue is an extended version of the third author's closing lecture of the seminar "Information & Physics (& Science Sociology)," in which Landauer's sentence is contrasted with John Archibald Wheeler's "It from Bit."

Phenomenology of Space and Time
139,09 € *
ggf. zzgl. Versand

This work celebrates the investigative power of phenomenology to explore the phenomenological sense of space and time in conjunction with the phenomenology of intentionality, the invisible, the sacred, and the mystical. It examines the course of life through its ontopoietic genesis, opening the cosmic sphere to logos. The work also explores, on the one hand, the intellectual drive to locate our cosmic position in the universe and, on the other, the pull toward the infinite. It intertwines science and its grounding principles with imagination in order to make sense of the infinite. This book is the second of a two-part work that contains papers presented at the 62nd International Congress of Phenomenology, The Forces of the Cosmos and the Ontopoietic Genesis of Life, held in Paris, France, August 2012. It features the work of scholars in such diverse disciplines as biology, anthropology, pedagogy, and psychology who philosophically investigate the cosmic origins of beingness.Coverage in this second part includes: Communicative Virtues of A-T. Tymieniecka's Phenomenology of Life, Intentionality of Time and Quantum - Phenomenological Sense of Space, Consciousness of the Cosmos: A Thought Experiment Through Philosophy and Science Fiction, The Cosmos and Bodily Life on Earth Elucidated within the Historicity of Human Existence, Novel as Path - Mamardashvili's Lectures on Proust, and Comments on Max Scheler's Thought and Philosophical Counseling.

Quantum Mathematical Physics

This edition combines the earlier two volumes on Quantum Mechanics of Atoms and Molecules and on Quantum Mechanics of Large Systems, thus including in a single volume the material for a two-semester course on quantum physics. Since this volume is already quite heavy, I could not include many new results which show how lively the subject is. I just want to mention that inequality (IV:4. 1. l. 1) has been sharpened by T. Weidl by a factor 2][ and the difficult problem 1 of (III:4. 6) has been solved by A. Martin. I have to thank N. Ilieva for the devotion in preparing this new edition. Vienna, November 2001 Walter Thirring Preface to the Second Edition: Quantum Mechanics of Atoms and Molecules Ever since the first edition of this volume appeared in 1980 quantum statistical mechanics has florished. Innumerable results in many areas have been obtained and it would require a series of volumes to do justice to all of them. On the other hand the first edition was already rather crowded with many details so it would not be overburdened any more. Thus I added only one chapter on quantum ergodic theory where one can get the main notions across without too much pain. Nevertheless many subjects treated in the book had splendidely developed ever since and the only way out I could see is to add some recent references which the interested reader can consult.
